i have just recently purchased a new 600watt ballast the guy in the shop said take it and run it for a couple of days,
if it's too hot bring the ballast and bulb back and swap for a 400watt ballast and bulb.
well i ran it for a couple of days and it was running a little bit too warm, sitting at 28 'c but spiking at 30'c,little bit too warm really,
but the temperature will drop over the next couple of weeks in the uk,
so my room will run cooler then and could probably cope with the 600watt.
i rang the guy in the shop,to tell him i would probably have to swap for 400watt kit,
unless i could run a 400watt bulb from the 600watt ballast, until it got cooler outside.
he kindly said he would email the company who make the ballast and ask,
here's the reply......
I have contacted the lighting manufacturer with the question of ‘can a 400 watt lamp be used in a 600 watt ballast?’
The answer is – The 400 watt lamp will ignite and run at 400 watts, but it will overwork the lamp and decrease the life of the lamp.
It will of course invalidate any warranty for the lamp – but I guess that doesn’t matter if it’s a spare or old lamp.
so it all looks good,i can run the 400watt when it's warm and the 600watt in cooler months
